Curriculum Drivers in Physical Education
We give children opportunities to be imaginative, to use experiences and observations to make connections in their learning and appreciate that learning can be accomplished in different forms. To do this, we have established some key ‘curriculum drivers’ which outline our aspirations for our children by the time they leave us (Expressive Communicators, Healthy Champions, Life Long learners, World Citizens and Open to possibilities). Our ‘curriculum drivers’ are designed to enable our pupils to ‘Reach for the Stars’ through their learning. We aim for our children to grow both academically and socially and our curriculum has been created to achieve these aspirations for all.
ExpresSive Communicators
Our Physical Education curriculum encourages pupils to communicate in a positive way during PE lessons. Communication is important in games to help our teams develop, work together and achieve success. Pupils are encouraged to give constructive feedback to their piers during PE lessons, which enables pupils to develop the skills needed to give feedback in a respectful manner.

HealThy Champions
Sport helps keep our minds and bodies fit and healthy. It helps improve our self-esteem and confidence. Understanding taking part in sports and games keep us healthy and fit for the future.

Life-Long LeArners
As part of our pupils sporting Learning journey through Ridgeway children take part in a variety of sports. They learn why playing sport and games are important in our early years and hopefully will stay with them all of their lives. The curriculum at Ridgeway encourages children to maintain and improve their sporting knowledge.
WoRld Citizens
Understanding different countries play different sports and how events like the Olympics are important to showcase sportspeople and countries around the world. Getting opportunities to take part in different dances and sports from around the world to help grow our children’s understanding of difference and diversity.

Open to PoSsibilities
Access to a wide range of sports and activities, including individual games, team games that help to develop positive attitudes and an understanding of how to improve their sporting performance.

Implementation
Curriculum Progression
Ridgeway’s Progression and Vocabulary Document has also been created. The document features the following threshold concepts: to understand how to learn about PE and to understand how to learn from PE. Under these threshold concepts, the document follows a progression of skills; these have then been matched to each year group’s unit. In addition, there is a progression of vocabulary, which ensures that vocabulary is progressively taught at the right point to marry with the skills that are being introduced.

Planning and Teaching
Using Ridgeway’s Progression and Vocabulary Document, activities are set to enable progression. This is includes indoor and outdoor PE lessons, indoor lessons focus on dance and gymnastics, outdoor lessons focus on invasion games, net and wall games, outdoor and adventurous activities, striking and fielding and athletics.
Children also have the opportunity to go swimming with lessons following the motivational award scheme
Our Physical Education learning character allows children to understand what lesson they are taking part in, determining the key aspect of learning, especially if links are made across other subjects.
Inclusion
All children will be given equal access to P.E. irrespective of race, gender, creed, level of ability or nationality. Mutual respect and tolerance for all cultures will be promoted through the study of P.E. Activities will be adapted for children with Special Educational Needs and disabilities to ensure that all children can participate. If a program needs to be adapted then the S.E.N.C.O. and P.E. Coordinator should be consulted and the program made attainable in liaison with the special need requirements.
Cross-curricular opportunities
Holistic teaching is especially important to the planning and delivery of our curriculum as it supports the viewpoint in which children see the world. Where links to other subjects can be made, they should be; however, teachers make explicit links to our learning characters to ensure children have a sound knowledge of the subject that is being taught as well as the learning objective that is being covered.
