Sports Statement
At Ridgeway Primary School we recognise the important contribution participation in physical activity makes to the health and well-being of our children. We believe that engagement in Physical Education not only helps to develop a pupils’ physical competence, but that it also has a huge impact on developing their confidence and self-esteem, as it is a subject in which success does not depend on academic ability. We believe it is particularly important to teach basic skills in a range of sports to enable children to discover their own strengths and talents which they can continue to develop further in out of school clubs or at secondary school.

Our PE Curriculum
Our school is committed to ensuring that all our pupils have access to a wide range of high quality PE and Sport provision. As part of this commitment, we employ our own Sports Coach as well as work in partnership with Progressive Sports to deliver the PE curriculum at Ridgeway. All pupils from Nursery to Year 6 benefit from their expertise on a weekly basis.
All pupils currently receive a minimum of 2 hours of high quality well-planned PE per week; one lesson delivered by our Sports Coach or Progressive Sports and the other by their class teacher. This curriculum provision is further boosted by the numerous extra- curricular activities that are on offer throughout EYFS, KS1 and KS2 both during the lunchtime and after school.
We have the facilities to provide one indoor lesson and one outdoor lesson each week; with the indoor lesson focusing on gymnastics and dance and the outdoor on games and athletics. In addition, all pupils in Year 4, 5 and 6 have a swimming lesson each week for one term of the year at the local leisure centre.

Other Facilities
School has developed its sporting facilities further with the addition of a Multi-Purpose Games Area (MUGA), an enclosed tarmac ball court, a daily mile track and a dance studio, which double as a training venue.
Competitive Sports
Throughout the year, we participate in a range of competitive sporting events. We believe participation in competitive sports is important as it encourages children not to give up when things go wrong, to build resilience and develop positive attitudes. They learn to be good sportsmen and women; learning to lose with dignity and to be humble when they win.

Partnership Work
Our school is part of the Primitas Learning Partnership; a group of four primary schools, two high schools and a special school with whom we hold regular interschool tournaments with each school taking its turn to host various events.
We have found this beneficial as it has given our children the opportunity to participate regularly in Inter-School competitions and events.
Summary
We believe that the physical education experiences children have at primary school will shape their future perception of physical activity.
The enthusiasm and enjoyment of the pupils at Ridgeway Primary Academy is testament to the passion and dedication of its entire staff.
Pupils leave the school equipped to enjoy sport for all its health and social benefits and for those who enjoy the competitive side, gain the skills, confidence and relevant experience to succeed at their chosen level and sport.
